What Is A PDO Thread Lift?
A PDO Thread Lift inserts threads made of polydioxanone (PDO) under the skin at various strategic locations. This instantly lifts and tightens the sagging tissues in the area. Then the PDF thread, made of the same material as absorbable surgical sutures, begins to be absorbed by the body in a process known as hydrolysis. This stimulates the body to produce new collagen around the threads. As the threads are absorbed, eventually turning to water, the new collagen remains, firming the skin for from six months to two years.
What Are PDO Absorbable Sutures?
It’s a synthetic absorbable surgical suture composed of polydioxanone. PDO sutures are used to perform cardiothoracic surgery (such as open-heart surgery). It’s one of the safest materials to be implanted in the body. Your skin fully absorbs it within 4 to 6 months & won’t leave you with any scar tissue.
Who Is A Good Candidate To Have A PDO Thread Lift?
A good candidate for a PDO Thread Lift has mild facial sagging on the neck, jowls, cheeks, and around the brows. The effects are similar to those of a facelift but are not as dramatic. Of course, there is no need for an extensive recovery with a PDO lift. This procedure has immediate lifting, coupled with residual firming and lifting as new collagen is produced as the threads are absorbed by the body.
If you have extensive sagging skin that has lost much of its elasticity, a PDO Thread Lift will not deliver the changes you probably would need. A surgical facelift and/or neck lift would be a better solution.
What Are The Benefits Of PDO Threading?
PDO Thread Lifts at Primary Aesthetic Skin Care tighten and lift sagging skin tissue using threads that are biocompatible with human skin. Once introduced into the deeper layers of the skin, these are the effects they create:
- Instant skin lifting
- Cellular renewal through collagen stimulation
- Skin tightening
- New blood vessel creation to improve skin circulation
What Areas Can Be Treated With A PDO Thread Lift?
The PDO Thread Lift is effective for these areas of the face:
- Cheeks
- Brows
- Undereye areas
- Crow’s feet
- Nasolabial folds
- Naso jugal folds
- Wrinkles around the mouth
- Jawline
- Jowls
- Neck
The PDO lift can also be used on the upper arms, thighs, and abdomen, but the main areas we address at Primary Aesthetic Skin Care are the face and neck.
Is A PDF Thread Lift A Safe Procedure?
The thread used for PDO lifts has been used in surgery for decades. These are absorbable sutures. Allergic reactions are exceedingly rare, and the material has been very successful. The FDA has cleared NovaThreads for the purpose of lifting tissue.
Are There Side Effects?
Still, there is potential for some side effects. Bruising, swelling, tenderness, and slight asymmetry are possible. Sometimes the threads can be visible on the skin surface. Temporary skin dimpling can occur. These problems usually resolve over the following weeks. Remember that the body eventually absorbs the PDO thread.
How Do PDO Absorbable Sutures Work?
It’s amazingly simple, actually!
1. Controlled Healing.
In medical terms, “Selective Inflammatory Response” is the principle behind a lot of aesthetic procedures (such as Fractional Laser, Chemical Peels & Microneedling). Our skin is very good at repairing itself, and by inserting Novathreads, we make it ‘heal’ itself by creating new collagen, naturally!
2. Your Skin Gently Reacts To The Inserted Threads.
Yes, PDO is fully absorbable, but that doesn’t mean your skin won’t react to it. During the 4 to 6 months after the PDO Thread Lift Bedford, your skin is also repairing itself around the sutures. It’s “controlled healing” happening underneath the skin!
3. Mesh Or Lift Technique-Your Choice.
There are two types of procedures with NovaThreads®:
- The first one, called the NuMesh, consists of creating a mesh under the skin (i.e. 2 sutures inserted vertically & 3 sutures horizontally). Sort of like a net, this mesh will serve as the foundation for our new collagen production. The NuMesh tightens the skin naturally from within. Results appear naturally, without any drastic change!
- The other technique, called the NuLift, produces a more dramatic and immediate result. The PDO sutures have “barbs” or “cogs”, which provide a grip underneath the skin. Sutures are inserted the same way, except they can be pulled in 1 or 2 directions, creating an instant skin repositioning. Just like the NuMesh, the skin will then build new collagen which will secure the lift!

Is A PDO Thread Lift Painful?
We apply local anesthetic to the areas where the PDO threads will be inserted, so the procedure is not painful. The threads are loaded in very fine, extremely sharp needles, which makes their entry easy and the pain quite manageable with local anesthetic.
What Is Recovery Like After Having A PDO Thread Lift?
Most patients can return to normal activities the next day. There can be some mild swelling and bruising, but this can be covered with makeup. Strenuous exercise needs to wait for two weeks so as not to overly stress the threads. You also want to keep blood pressure down across your face and neck. It’s a good idea to arrange pillows so that you sleep on your back for the first week as the threads settle.
